Pentaerythritol is primarily used in the coatings industry to manufacture alkyd resin coatings, improving the hardness, gloss, and durability of coating films. It is also used as a raw material for rosin resins used in paints, varnishes, and printing inks, and can be used to make drying oils, smoldering paints, and aircraft lubricants. Pentaerythritol's fatty acid esters are highly effective lubricants and polyvinyl chloride plasticizers, while its epoxy derivatives are raw materials for the production of non-ionizing surfactants. Pentaerythritol readily forms complexes with metals and is also used as a water softener in detergent formulations. It is also used in the production of pharmaceuticals and pesticides. The pentaerythritol molecule contains four identical hydroxymethyl groups, resulting in a high degree of symmetry, making it a common raw material for the preparation of multifunctional compounds. Esterification produces pentaerythritol triacrylate, which is used in coatings.
