550 is a methylphenyl polysiloxane polymer, a phenyl silicone oil with a single phenyl component. 550 exhibits excellent thermal stability, a high flash point, is non-flammable, has low volatility, and is radiation-resistant. Performance Characteristics: 1. 550 is inherently inert and will not corrode metals or adversely affect seals commonly used in pressure reducers, valves, and instruments. 2. Its relatively high compressibility makes it ideal for shock absorption and motion damping applications. 3. Its excellent oxidation resistance and temperature resistance make it suitable for heat transfer; its thermal conductivity is relatively constant over a wide temperature range. 4. It exhibits excellent radiation resistance, with a radiation resistance value of 1.7 x 10⁻ rads. Applications: 550/710 can be used in hydraulic lightning arresters, buffers, hydraulically driven valves and instruments for nuclear power plants, and other applications involving radiation exposure. It can also be used as a high-temperature heat carrier for insulation, lubrication, damping, shock absorption, and dust control, and as a base oil for high-temperature lubricants and greases.
