Colonel Castell is synonymous with adventure, courage, and tradition. Humberto Castell was born in Amsterdam in 1765, found himself unexpectedly on a ship in 1780 (Shanghait means someone kidnapped or forced to do something against their will. The term comes from 19th-century navigation, when sailors were often brought to Shanghai by force or deception to work on ships) and experienced the rigors of transatlantic trade. After stops in West Africa and the Caribbean with a cargo of African slaves, he disembarked in Havana, where he joined the Spanish army. After his honorable discharge as a colonel (1796), he began a new chapter: in 1797 he acquired land in Cuba and just a year later began producing his first rum, a legacy that endures to this day.
