Description
The transducer converts high-frequency electrical energy into high-frequency mechanical vibrations. It contains several piezoelectric ceramic discs, sandwiched between two metal blocks under pressure. Between each disc is a thin metal plate, which forms the electrode. When a sinusoidal electrical signal is fed to the transducer through the electrode, the disc expands and contracts, producing axial vibrations. The ultrasonic transducer, ultrasonic generator, and ultrasonic horn make up a complete ultrasonic system. The applications of ultrasonic welding are very wide and are used in many industries, including electrical and computer, automotive and aerospace, medical and packaging. Whether two parts can be ultrasonically welded depends on their thickness. If they are too thick, the process will not join them. This is the main obstacle to metal welding. However, wires, microcircuit connections, metal sheets, foils, strips, and meshes are often joined using ultrasonic welding. Ultrasonic welding is a very popular technology for joining thermoplastics. It is fast and easy to automate, with welding times typically below 1 second, and no ventilation system is required to remove heat or exhaust gases.
