Description
316 grade is the standard molybdenum-containing grade, second only to 304 in total production among austenitic stainless steels. Molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistance than 304 grades, especially in chloride environments.
The 316L grade is a low-carbon version of 316 with very high resistance to sensitization (grain boundary carbide precipitation). It is widely used in the oil and gas and chemical industries because of its cost-effective corrosion resistance and ease of manufacture. There is usually no significant price difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel. The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even at low temperatures. Compared to chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels, 316L stainless steels have higher creep, breaking stress and tensile strength at high temperatures.
