Description
Tributyl Citrate (TBC) has attracted wide attention due to its excellent compatibility, high plasticizing efficiency, non-toxicity, low volatility, and strong weather resistance. It has become the preferred green, environmentally friendly alternative to phthalate plasticizers.
TBC maintains good flexibility even in cold regions, and it is resistant to light, water, and heat. It exhibits good thermal stability without discoloration during heat sealing, making it safe, durable, and suitable for applications such as food and pharmaceutical packaging, plasma bags, and disposable injection and infusion tubing.
TBC can plasticize PVC, PP, and cellulose resins due to its good compatibility. When used together with other non-toxic plasticizers, it can increase the hardness of products, making it particularly suitable for soft cellulose ethers. TBC is non-toxic and antibacterial, does not promote bacterial growth, and also has flame-retardant properties. Therefore, it is widely used in vinyl resins.
It is particularly important for films, beverage tubing, food bottle seals, medical devices, wall panels and ceilings in hospitals, homes, restaurants, hotels, and public venues, as well as kitchens and sanitary areas in cafeterias — all of which require this type of antibacterial and flame-retardant plasticizer.
Plastic products inside vehicles, including defense equipment such as aircraft, warships, and armored vehicles, also require the use of this plasticizer.
TBC is widely used in toy plastics as well.
It improves the UV resistance of nitrocellulose and serves as a solvent for various fragrances.
TBC can enhance the cleaning power of detergents and is used as an additive and emulsifier in cosmetics. It helps treat and nourish injured skin and prevents moisture loss from the skin's stratum corneum due to UV rays, maintaining the skin’s moisture and physiological elasticity.
Other applications include:
- Lubricant and extreme pressure anti-wear agent
- Smoother for polyethylene resins
- In tobacco, adding TBC can absorb HCN (hydrogen cyanide) generated during cigarette combustion, thus reducing toxicity to smokers, and also maintaining cigarette flexibility to prevent breakage
- Foam suppressor for protein-containing liquids
- Deodorizing agent for shoes and socks
- Fragrance additive for paper
- Anti-scorching agent in rubber processing
